Stephanie Eckman: Survey Misreporting: Three Related Forms of Measurement Error

This talk will explore recent findings on three related forms of measurement error. The first is underreporting in screening interviews which aim to identify subpopulations of interest. The second is misreporting to filter questions, that is, survey questions which can trigger follow up questions. The third form on measurement error is misreporting to questions in panel surveys which are administered wave after wave. Each of these types of questions provides respondents with a method to shortcut the questionnaire and reduce its length and burden. I will present results from several surveys, in multiple modes, that have experimentally explored the phenomena of misreporting to such items.
