Given an abelian variety over a finite field, its Newton polygon is a combinatorial gadget that encodes a numerous amount of  information about the geometry of the variety. The Newton stratification of the moduli space of (principally polarized) abelian varieties is well understood, but this is not the case when we focus on Jacobian of curves.

The aim of the talk is to introduce the topic and this will allow us to touch various sectors of mathematics: geometry, arithmetic, number theory, (non-archimidean) analysis...
