Abstract.

There are several different methods for finding roots of polynomials. This essay provides an overview of various methods that can be used to find the roots of a polynomial. Those methods include formulas for degrees 2-4, the rational root theorem, techniques for managing multiple roots, the Newton-Raphson method, the bisection method, Descartes’ rule of signs, and Sturm’s theorem for determining the number of real roots within a given interval. The essay will highlight the methods background, development, and examples of how these methods are applied. The aim is to offer an overview of the different methods that exist, as well as the actual origins and backgrounds of these methods.
