Abstract:

A ship is typically constructed from different types of metals. These have different potentials in the Galvanic series, which give rise to electric currents in the sea water. This, in turn, gives rise to corrosion on the ship and to a detectable electromagnetic field. We discuss how this is modelled mathematically, and how the problem can be formulated as an integral equation. Further, we discuss related problems on how to reduce both corrosion and avoid detection.
