Turku Intelligent Embedded and Robotic Systems: From Perception to Action

Tomi Westerlund

Abstract: In recent years, the integration of robotic technology has expanded beyond traditional manufacturing and industrial applications, penetrating a variety of sectors such as research, search and rescue operations, healthcare, agriculture, forest management, and logistics, and among others. This diversification in application areas underscores not only the advancements of robots but also highlights the growing dependency of various fields on automated systems for efficiency, precision, and safety. The actual applications of multiple agents in different scenarios require comprehensive understanding of the surroundings which are typically sophisticated and harsh at times and the collaboration within various robot platforms including UAVs, USVs, quadruped, and mobile robots. Our research has concentrated on cross-modal sensor fusion for the purpose of high-level robot perception and leveraging the strength of diverse robot platforms for the collaboration among varied environments under different weather conditions.
