In a rotating coordinate system the Laplacian can be written in the form of a magnetic Hamiltonian augmented by a quadratic term corresponding to the centrifugal force. The interplay of the magnetic and centrifugal forces with the interactions between particles in a many-body system confined in a trap leads to a rich palette of phenomena that can, at least partly, be studied in experiments with ultra cold Bose gases.
In the talk I shall review the mathematical framework for analyzing these effects and, if time permits, present some recent results on the emergence of strongly correlated quantum Hall phases as the parameters of the model are varied.
