What do we mean by a "hard" surface integral? In this talk "hard" will mean that the integrand has a singularity somewhere on the surface. This happens in many applications, for example when computing the electrostatic potential from a surface charge density. It also happens in boundary integral methods, which we use in our group. In this talk I will explain why this is hard from a numerical perspective, and one possible way to solve it. The solution is based on a series expansion of the integrand in terms of spherical harmonics.
