Abstract.

The multireference alignment (MRA) problem concerns the recovery of a clean template from multiple shifted, noisy observations. With several applications in signal processing and image recognition, it has recently been studied as a simplified model for the 3D reconstruction problem in cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), a method for imaging biological macromolecules at near-atomic resolution. In this talk, we discuss various approaches to solving the MRA problem and how prior knowledge on the underlying clean signal can be used to inform the reconstruction process.
