Jan-Erik Björk: The Kovalevsky Gyroscope
Time: Wed 2014-02-19 10.30 - 11.30
Location: Room 306, building 6, Kräftriket, Department of Mathematics, Stockholm University
The lecture will expose the construction of a special rigid body which rotates around a fixed point and gravity is the sole external force, such that the Euler-Lagrange equations in addition to the standard three integrals has a fourth integral, and hence the dynamical equations can be solved by quadrature. Background from mechanics dealing with rigid bodies will be presented during the lecture.
