Abstract: We explore the mathematical description of the universe through the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric. We will introduce the metric and its geometric properties, before studying explicit solutions of the Einstein field equations in the FLRW setting. Furthermore we will discuss how the expansion of the universe can be measured and how it relates to the formulation of the FLRW metric.
