Topology change in general relativity concerns the question of whether the topology of the universe can change over time. We present two classical theorems which give necessary conditions for this to be possible. The original proof of one of these theorems is incomplete. Substantial work, using methods for surfaces of low regularity, is necessary to complete the proof, and we discuss some aspects of this work.
