Eric Larsson: Can you see the geometry of a lens?

Suppose that you are given a transparent object with a (possibly non-constant) index of refraction. Can you determine its index of refraction by looking at the object and seeing how light is refracted by it? A partial answer to this question will be given, and related questions will be discussed.
