Rating scales are commonly used for self-assessments of attitudes and perceptions and also for expert-rating of the severity of a diagnosis, grading of performance etc. Irrespective of the type of scaling and of the number of possible response alternatives, assessments on scales and other ordered classifications generate ordinal data having the rank-invariant measurement properties in common. Hence statistical methods applicable to ordinal data are often based on ranks. The aim is to demonstrate two ranking approaches to evaluation of problems involving paired ordinal data. Differences in application and hence in interpretation will be demonstrated by empirical data.
