The general idea of support varieties is to associate to an object, or its cohomology, an algebraic variety. For the module category over a commutative local complete intersection ring there is already a well-established theory of support varieties. However, in this talk we will give a very simple and lesser known equivalent definition of support variety. In the context of complete intersection rings, there occur many related complete intersection rings, which we call intermediate complete intersections, and one can ask how support varieties over these rings are related. Using our alternative definition we give a very simple answer to this question, along with some applications. This is joint work with Petter Bergh.
