I will present an algorithm for computing the Euler Characteristic of a linear combination of line bundles on a smooth projective variety. The input consists of equations for the variety and divisors representing the line bundles. The main ingredient is the use of polar classes to compute intersection numbers of Chern classes together with the Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formula for the Euler characteristic. This is joint work with Sandra Di Rocco and Chris Peterson.
