Ilya Smirnov: More questions about Lech’s inequality

Abstract

Lech’s inequality connects multiplicity and colength, two fundamental invariants of an ideal. Lech showed that the inequality is never sharp in dimension at least 2. I will explain why a sharper inequality might be useful, discuss potential ways to do so, present partial results, and pose open problems.
