Machine Learning (ML) is the buzzword of the tech world today. In recent times the mathematical techniques used within the field have enabled huge advances in fields such as picture and video recognition and generation, speech-to-text translation, text-to-text language translation, game playing and many other fields. There is reason to believe ML will change society profoundly, offering huge benefits but also demanding sacrifices through e.g rendering classical jobs redundant. At the same time, the potential of ML is often deeply exaggerated.

In this talk I will try to give an overview of the fundamental concepts within ML constituting the basis of its success, also pointing towards the opportunities and threats it may pose for the future.
