Jack Hall: The Picard functor mini-course, lecture 7

The Picard functor of a scheme parameterizes its line bundles. In this mini-course we will prove that frequently, the Picard functor is also a scheme. The traditional approach, due to Grothendieck, is to use Hilbert schemes and the theory of divisors. Instead, we will introduce algebraic stacks, and use M. Artin's techniques to prove that the Picard functor is algebraic.
