Optimization has become an indispensable tool in many application areas. In this talk, I will discuss how research on fundamental method development and research in application areas may benefit from each other. I will discuss fundamental properties of iterative methods for solving linear equations and their relation to optimization problems arising in radiation therapy. In addition, I will mention an application on optimization of metabolic networks.

The research on radiation therapy is carried out jointly with RaySearch Laboratories AB. The research on cell metabolism is carried out jointly with the KTH School of Bioengineering.
