The GAGA principle allows one to often "algebraize" an analytic geometry.
In the first half of the talk---aimed at graduate students---I will discuss
the classical results pertaining to the GAGA principle due to Chow and Serre.
In the second half of the talk, I will describe an extension of the GAGA principle
that (as an application) allows one to algebraize any compact moduli space of curves.
