Respondent driven sampling (RDS) is a commonly used substitute for random sampling when studying hidden populations, such as injective drug users or men who have sex with men, for which no sampling frame is known. RDS works like a snowball sample, but can, given that some assumptions are fulfilled, generate unbiased population estimates. Since it was proposed in 1997, RDS has become the preferred method when sampling hidden populations, and hundreds of studies has been conducted worldwide. The method may also be considered as a solution to the alarming decrease in response rate for traditional surveys during the last decade. RDS has seen a rapid development in both theory and practice and is currently attracting the interest of several research groups.
