Michael Hanke: Online courses in Math and Programming for independent repetition: Support for students and teachers

Our students come with a variety of different backgrounds. At the
same time, colleagues at TU Berlin and TU Delft had very good
experiences with interactive, web-based material supporting their
basic courses.
Therefore, TU Delft, TU Berlin, Aalto and KTH have joined their
efforts to create web-based courses to support repeating the necessary
knowledge for a successful start. So far, the courses include:
* Matlab/octave
* Numerical Analysis
* Probability and Statistics
The final result goes beyond the original intention. The educational
concept of these courses is highly flexible. It ranges from pure self-study
over blended learning, to a situation where the course material is used as
complementary to a regular course. It may be supplemented by a virtual or
standard tutorial. The material invites to explorative learning. Each module
focuses on basic concepts, enhanced by visualizations and refreshing
facilities. It involves self-assessment tools and training facilities with
automatically corrected home work problems.
During the seminar I will present some background and demonstrate the usage
from a student's perspective and for example how one can teach oneself
Matlab.
The courses are accessible via the internet at http://www.s3m2.eu. You are
kindly invited to test the courses. Any feedback is greatly welcome! For
testing please get in touch with me.
