The presentation is aimed to summarize my research on changes in women’s work commitment during the transition to parenthood in Sweden, as well as career related consequences of parental leave taking among mothers in Sweden, Germany and the United States. I have used Fixed effects models to estimate changes in work commitment during the transition to parenthood and event history analyses to study how parental leave taking influences mothers’ job transitions to higher or lower prestige jobs (compared to the current job). I will also discuss a study where we try to control for unobserved heterogeneity in parental leave taking and career outcomes.
