Dynamic programming methods have been used extensively in route optimization, but
often only to minimize one objective or a weighted sum of objectives. In this paper we introduce
a multi-criterion shortest path algorithm for solving the route optimization problem for use
with deterministic and ensemble weather forecasts. We demonstrate how the method can be
used with ensemble weather forecasts and compare the results of ensemble forecast routing to
those of deterministic forecasts for several test cases. The results show that ensemble routing
may be useful for reducing the risk of arriving late, especially when the voyage is through
harsh and/or unstable weather. Further, the results show that ensemble routing is better at
predicting the fuel consumption of a voyage.

Note that the seminar will be held in room 3424.
