Lena Wiese: Security Strategies for Data Outsourcing and the Usability Trade-Off

When outsourcing data to a storage provider, several security concerns arise. We survey mechanisms for achieving confidentiality of outsourced data with a special focus on strategies for data distribution on several independent providers. A logical definition of confidentiality based on non-derivability of secrets is given. The data distribution strategies can be accompanied by cryptographic mechanisms. However, there is an intricate trade-off between confidentiality and usability (in particular, in terms of collaborating users) of outsourced data which we will briefly discuss.
