Abstract: Black holes play a central role in astrophysics and cosmology. The Kerr black hole solution is expected to be the unique model of a rotating black hole in general relativity. In order to establish its astrophysical relevance it is vital to show that the Kerr model is dynamically stable. This question, the Black Hole Stability Problem, is one of the most important open problems in general relativity. In this talk, I will show how the special geometry of the Kerr black hole leads to symmetries and separability properties which play a fundamental role in understanding the black hole stability problem. The talk is based on joint work with Thomas Bäckdahl, Steffen Aksteiner and Pieter Blue.
