A partition is said to be t-core if none of its hook lengths are divisible by the integer t. Despite the strange definition, these objects turn up in at least three distinct contexts. I will talk about their combinatorial aspects, as well as their connection to representation theory and modular forms. No familiarity with partitions is required.
