Black holes in illustrations and movies tend to be shown as spherical. Are black holes necessarily spheres? If we compress a sufficiently large mass along a circle, should we not be able to build a black hole with the shape of a torus?
In this talk I will explain how black holes relate to geometry, and answer the question in the title: Are black holes always spherical?
