Dustin Cartwright: Construction of Lindström valuations of algebraic extensions

Abstract: An algebraic matroid is a combinatorial structure associated to a collection of elements in a field extension, or, equivalently, a chosen set of coordinates for an algebraic variety. In positive characteristic, an algebraic matroid has a valuation, called the Lindström valuation, which can be defined from an analogue of tropicalization on the field extension. I will explain this analogy as well as several more direct, algebraic interpretations of the Lindström valuation.
