Carla Cederbaum: Teaching mathematics, or teaching to learn -- and to teach -- mathematics?

In the course of their education and their academic careers, most mathematicians develop their own style and methodology of teaching mathematics. We do so based on our own (reflected) experiences as students and teaching assistants, some of us also based on trial and error and on discussion with our peers. I will try to make a case for also taking into account evidence collected by social scientists and psychologists about how humans learn in general, and learn mathematics in particular. To illustrate this idea, I will give some examples of teaching methods I have developed on this basis such as essay writing in the math classroom and specific grading rubrics. In addition, I will report from teaching trainings I gave for mathematics (under-)graduate students in the Berlin Mathematical School and at the Goethe University Frankfurt in Germany. There will be time for discussion.
