We discuss ongoing work with John-Kristian Ottem, Kristian Ranestad and Cynthia Vinzant on the geometry of three-dimensional spectrahedra given by symmetric 4x4-matrices. Their boundaries are quartic surfaces with up to 16 nodes, of which any number between 0 and 10 can lie on the spectrahedron. Their planar shadows are defined by degree 12 curves with 46 singular points.
