In this talk we first briefly survey recent research on complexity and expressivity of weak fragments of first-order logic. Such fragments include, e.g., guarded fragments and two-variable systems. We then discuss the recently introduced uniform one-dimensional fragment (UF1), which generalizes the standard two-variable fragment in a way that leads to the possibility of defining non-trivial properties of relations of arbitrary arities. The increased expressivity does not lead to an increase in complexity: we show that UF1 is NEXPTIME-complete. The work presented is joint work with Emanuel Kieronski and Lauri Hella.
