In this talk I would like to discuss an attempt at a sort-of spectral
theory based on the concept of a metric space rather than that of a
vector space. Two advantages of this are that it applies to certain
non-linear settings and that it extends to random products. Thurston's
spectral theorem for surface homeomorphisms and random walks on groups
are among the examples I will mention.
