The method of Grushin problems has proven itself to be a simple yet very useful tool in the study of spectral problems. Roughly speaking it amounts to extending the operator under consideration to a suitably chosen invertible system of operators. This may then, in combination with Shur's complement formula, reveal detailed spectral information about the operator of interest.

I will give a short survey about the basic ideas underlying such Grushin problems, their connection to analytic Fredholm theory as well as some applications concerning perturbation theory, trace formulae and random matrix theory.
