In recent years, DNA sequence data have become increasingly available thanks to huge advances in biotechnology. This gives rise to many new questions and consequently to the development of mathematical models to address these questions. First, I will show you some interesting facts about genetics and explain the role of mathematical models in this field. Then, I will focus on the Kingman's coalescent process. Despite being introduced in 1982, this elegant stochastic process provides the basis for many models in use today for the analysis of genetic data.
